Hi,
from my experience, I think that communication tools are most important with any group action, such as open source development:
- You need a repository for your data
(SVN Server, JCR, Network drive, ....)
- Plus means to discuss that data:
- Skype, Mail, a Wiki, a Blog, a Forum like this one here
Personally, I am using SVN (VM-appliance) and a TiddlyWiki, since I am a lazy bum when it comes to installing stuff ;-)

Hi Marty,
I agree, communication tools are extremely important for Open Source development. I would even go one step further and say that one of the main reasons for the success of Open Source lies in the ease of communication via the Internet.
Personally I prefer a Forum or a Wiki, where everybody gets the chance to join the discussion easily. From my perspective mailinglists are typically less well arranged and it's harder to catch up if you join in the middle of a discussion.
Cheers
Kerstin
